One of the many top players to come from the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida, Sabine wasted no time in making her mark in the game.
The German turned pro in 2006 and was making her Grand Slam debut two years later at the Australian Open where she beat the 16th seed on the way to the third round.
Her first WTA success came in 2009 when she won the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.
After missing much of the 2010 season with injury, Sabine bounced back the following year to win two WTA titles and reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon after entering the tournament as a wildcard – only the second player to do so. She also played in the women's doubles final.
